Severn Faculty RCGP Michael Lennard Reception

Dr Michael Lennard was one of the most influential figures in General Practice and the RCGP in the South West. He graduated from Bristol University and practiced on a large peripheral council housing estate in the challenging and deprived area of Hartcliffe, Bristol. He worked throughout in partnership with his wife Joan, who shared his interest in teaching and training. In 1961 he was a Nuffield Travelling Fellow and in 1963 gave in the 7th annual Gale Memorial Lecture, a key contribution entitled ‘Training for General Practice’, in which he coined the term ‘generalist’. In 1972 he was appointed the first Regional Adviser in General Practice in the South West. He was elected chairman of the South West RCGP faculty board and was for many years a RCGP examiner. He strove for and actively promoted a Department of General Practice at Bristol University and was a staunch supporter of the Severn Faculty. Michael was well read and witty, with a shrewd mind and consistent common sense.

The Michael Lennard Reception not only recognises him as an important figure in GP training in the South West, but also allows the Severn Faculty to warmly welcome all new Members and commend their achievements in attaining their MRCGP. The Faculty continues to actively support both trainees and newly qualified GPs in Severn, by providing an educational programme and sponsoring various activities including attendance at the RCGP national conference, WONCA conferences and the Excellence Award for Medical work outside the GP Training Programme.
