This workshop:

  •  Explores the key evidence – using presentation & facilitated group discussion
  •  Uses a skills framework for improving consultations
  •  Engages learners in practical exercises to improve their skills
  •  Rehearses the “best buy” skills that increase effectiveness and reduce medico-legal  and clinical risk

The health agenda is moving more and more towards prevention of ill health and maintenance of health. Clinicians in primary & secondary care, occupational health & private care all increasingly discuss behaviour change in their consultations. So, whether it is in the management of a chronic condition (e.g. diabetes, hypertension) or the targeting of specific behaviours (e.g. smoking, drinking, alcohol, substance misuse and losing weight) consultations are increasingly likely to address patient behaviour. However these sorts of conversations are frequently cited (by doctors, nurses and allied professionals) as being amongst the most frustrating that they have with their patients.

How can we target our time efficiently whilst enhancing our effectiveness with patients?

There is an increasing research base to show us which behaviours help. Skills based training has proof of effectiveness - incorporating practice, observation, feedback and further rehearsal. Our seminar introduces some significant research evidence, particularly some of the skills of Motivational Interviewing. We allow the group to process this by facilitated discussion. Group exercises help the participants to examine important messages, moving to rehearsal of specific skill areas that are most practical for front line clinical staff. Participants will leave the seminar with enhanced skills for these conversations with patients.

There is a balance of brief presentation, focused discussion, group work and skills focus – supported by a referenced workbook and moving briskly to retain learner engagement.

Overall:

Featuring Motivational Interviewing:  our main, but not exclusive, inspiration for the day. We point to evidence supporting this approach in primary care. A full motivational interview may take 45-60 minutes but many of the techniques can be applied in 2 or 3 minutes. We major on these “quick wins” - suitable to be used flexibly, as needed, in primary care consultations with doctors, nurses and other clinicians.

Plenty of skills practice - but no role play in front of the group. Practical suggestions are demonstrated and then practised in groups of three, with the whole audience working simultaneously, and each person having a go as clinician; as patient and as observer.

24 Page Course Book accompanies the course. This is a workbook for the day, and a reference for later, including a focused bibliography. We include the Change Plan Worksheet – adapted from Motivational Interviewing and suitable for use in primary care consultations with patients. You are able to copy this and use freely in your practice.
