Objectives

  • To raise awareness about the influence of culture on attitudes towards learning, performance, and continuing professional development
  • To consider cultural dimensions in managing the educational and supervisory relationship

 

Outcomes

At the conclusion of the Workshop we anticipate participants will:

  • Have more understanding of how culture can influence perceptions of learning and professional development
  • Begin to consider how that understanding is translated into working practice where there are concerns about performance

 

Programme

Notes for participants: the workshop seeks to promote learning from shared experience. Please come prepared to share examples from your own practice that can be used to illuminate concepts about cultural issues, particularly examples where you have been uncertain how to proceed.

11.30 - 12.45 - Cross cultural communication - Cultural dimensions in the Doctor-Patient Relationship

12.45 - 13.15 - Summary of Learning points

13.15 - 14.00 - Lunch

14.00 - 15.00 - Case Studies - Putting concepts into practice

  • Small group work on the application of concepts to educational situations presented by group members

15.00 - 15.30 - Bringing it together: Giving Feedback effectively

  • Small group work with rehearsal of skills and feedback on styles

15.30 - 15.45 - Tea Break

15.45 - 16.15 - Review of Relevant Concepts and Skills
