The RCGP Severn Faculty will be holding a full day workshop which will:
  • Increase your effectiveness and improve your use of time
  • Enhance consultation satisfaction for both you and your patients
  • Look at ways to reduce your risk
This workshop:
  • Explores the key evidence – using presentation and facilitated group discussion
  • Uses a skills framework for improving consultations
  • Engages learners in practical exercises to improve their skills
  • Is aimed at doctors, nurses and allied clinicians; it works particularly well with mixed audiences
  • Practices the identification and labelling of specific skills
  • Rehearses the “best buy” skills that increase effectiveness and reduce medico-legal and clinical risk

There is an increasing research base to show us which behaviours promote the effective use of time when clinicians interact with patients.

Interestingly, there is also some evidence about which behaviours lower medico-legal and clinical risk. Happily, there is very significant overlap between them.

We also know that effective learner change in communication skills has only been demonstrated by training that takes a skills based approach - incorporating practice, observation, feedback and further rehearsal. We use this approach.

Our workshop introduces some of the most significant research evidence and allows the group to process it with facilitated discussion. Group exercises allow the participants to examine some of the important messages. The overarching theme is for clinicians to enhance the clarity of their verbal behaviour. We explore the essential elements of the Calgary Cambridge framework for skills development, then practice identifying and labelling skills from pre-recorded consultations.

Finally we consider and rehearse the specific skill areas that will most repay development (“openings”, “getting the full story” and “explanations”). There is a balance of brief presentation, focused discussion, group work and skills rehearsal – supported by a referenced workbook and moving briskly to keep you interested. You will leave with enhanced skills for conversations with your patients.
