Overview

An academic series of expert classes mainly held at Deanery House in Bristol on topical and emerging areas of importance in medical education for Postgraduate Medical Education. They are open to HEE Southwest, Postgraduate Medical Educational Teams, Educators in Trusts and GP Trainers. Global and nationally important speakers and subject experts are sought and invited.

Aim

A programme of faculty development for senior educators in the Severn and Peninsula to assist in creating a consistent understanding about current developments and issues affecting medical education.

Reasons for offering this Master Class:

Severn Postgraduate Medical Education recruits, advises on the employment of, and formally assesses thousands of postgraduate medical trainees every year. These activities are shaped by complex and ever shifting legislative requirements. Increasingly trainees are aware of the legal procedures they can utilise if they choose to invoke formal complaints procedures and our trainers and medical education professionals/managers are becoming more fearful of being pulled into such processes. This session will raise collective understanding of these issues addressing the specific legal aspects that faculty ought to be aware of in managing and developing trainees

Speaker details:

Philip Farrar has ten years' experience in Employment Law and is listed as a leading individual in Administrative and Public Law, Employment Law and Healthcare Law within Legal 500. Philip has developed an eight strong public sector employment team in three years at Hill Dickinson. Philip acts for the NHS, local government and education bodies throughout England and wales including national organisations.

He has acted for two NHS Trusts successfully resisting Public Interest Disclosure claim where over £2m was claimed in damages. Costs were in fact paid by the Consultant Claimant.

Philip also advises and supervises team meetings in outsourcing and other contractual agreements with regards to TUPE matters.

Aim of this master class:

To understand the organisational principles and practices that employment tribunals and legal experts expect to see in place and used by large employers and professional training organisations.

Objectives: by the end of the master class participants will be able to:

  • Summarise the key pieces of employment and contractual legislation and established legal precedence that apply to Medical Education
  • List the most common legal mistakes that professional training organisations make in their operations
  • Outline where legal challenges are most likely to be faced in our recruitment and assessment processes
