FAO All Trainees: Trainee Association for the Study of Medical Education

What is TASME?

Many medical trainees enjoy teaching but getting and staying involved in medical education as a busy junior doctor can be difficult. TASME (Trainee Association for the Study of Medical Education) is a special interest group of ASME (Association for the Study of Medical Education) that aims to support trainee involvement in teaching. It is run by a committee of junior doctors from a number of specialties, with the support of the ASME executive committee.

TASME is designed to benefit junior doctors with an interest in medical education (be it teaching or research) through the following aims:

  • To foster an interest in medical education amongst junior doctors through activities, events and discussion that support trainee involvement in medical education.
  • To influence medical education policy and practice through representation within ASME.
  • To encourage and promote good practice by developing systematic training in medical education and research.
  • To create a forum for trainees to exchange viewpoints and experiences of medical education and discuss their role within it.
  • To encourage, promote and conduct medical education research initiated by trainees.
  • To promote on-going involvement in teaching throughout training and careers in medical education.

Why join TASME?

We have a range of benefits for TASME members including access to key journals (Medical Education and The Clinical Teacher) and the opportunity to attend educational workshops. These workshops will not only be a means of keeping up to date with current educational practice but also serve as a forum to meet other trainees interested in medical education, discuss and initiate research projects, explore teaching ideas and debate current issues.

For anyone interested in a career in medical education TASME is a great point of contact to give you the help and advice you need. Our regular member’s newsletter will tell you about upcoming workshops near you, and what else is happening in the world of medical education.

To find out more about us please contact info@asme.org.uk . Membership is free if you are already an ASME member. Recruitment starts now!

TASME representatives will also be recruiting at this year’s Annual Scientific Meeting from the 18th – 20th July in Brighton. In addition to workshops we are hoping to have some informal drinks straight after the conference on Wednesday 18th July (Venue TBC) and a meeting to elect the new TASME committee for 2012/13 on the afternoon of Friday 20th July – hope to see you there!

We look forward to welcoming you as a trainee member of ASME and hope we can benefit both your training and career.

    •  This is a reminder that we are currently conducting a research study to investigate how doctors cope in clinical settings generally, and how having a Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD) such as dyslexia may affect doctors and their work. Please note, you do not need to have a Specific Learning Difficulty to participate. If you have already taken part, thank you so much for your participation.  If you are a medical doctor complete a questionnaire about these issues  If you are a medical doctor and have, or suspect you have, an SpLD and would be interested in taking part in a telephone interview to discuss the effect of your SpLD on your work as a doctor, please enter your contact details  The interview would be organised at a time of your convenience and would last up to 40 minutes (once only). It would be digitally recorded from the telephone for transcription purposes.  Your responses will be anonymised in our data analyses and reporting and any data you provide will be kept confidential. You can find more information about both of these studies in the Information Sheets available via the links above.  If you have any queries please contact Jennifer Musto  j.musto@uea.ac.uk
