Global Health Fellowship Programme - SUSPENDED

A letter from Dr Robin While (Head Global Health Fellowship Programme) 3rd April 2020

'Dear Global Health Fellows and Programme Leads,

Following discussions with HEE Global Engagement, we have taken the difficult decision to temporarily suspend the Global Health Fellowship (GHF) Programme with immediate effect.

We advise all the GHF 2020/21 cohorts to contact their Education Supervisors, Training Programme Directors and Heads of Schools to arrange to return to their Training Programmes as a result of the COVID-19 emergency.

Health Education England Deans are currently not approving OOPE applications for trainees to work overseas. Travel to and from South Africa is currently suspended and its Government is not currently approving visa or work permit applications for EU or US nationals.

The impact of Covid-19 in South Africa is uncertain and we don’t know how the situation will change or how long these changes will last. We have already advised all GHFs who are already deployed in KwaZulu Natal and the Eastern Cape to return to the United Kingdom.

We plan to recommence the Global Health Fellowship Programme once this crisis has passed, although the timing of this will inevitably depend on the post Covid-19 situation in Sub-Saharan Africa. The recruitment of foreign workforce may well prove essential in the future to help meet the healthcare needs in South Africa and other countries.

I want to formally offer my thanks and appreciation for your commitment to the Global Health Fellowship Programme. I’m sure you will have future opportunities to work overseas in resource poor rural communities- your time will come.
Please stay safe and look after your loved ones and colleagues during these challenging times.

Best Wishes

Dr Robin While'
