Additional training requirements

After holidays taken into account, this provides 20 working days WTE (or 60 working days for Public Health scholarships) for use on Scholarship work over the duration of ST3. Each of these sessions should be spread evenly over ST3, with specific agreement of their Educational Supervisor.

The scholars must be rigorous about how they use and document their additional time:

  • All additional scholarship time must be approved in advance by your ES, and recorded so that you can justify what you’ve done and when
  • All scholarship work should be documented in the eportfolio learning log under the title “project work”. This will help the ARCP panel see what additional work you’ve undertaken.
  • Those in 3m scholarships should have additional clinical supervisor reports (written by your project supervisor) completed prior to their final ESR
  • Scholarship write-ups must be completed and uploaded to your eportfolio (and emailed to your project supervisor and GP school) prior to your final ESR, otherwise you risk passing your final ARCP.


Guidance for GP ST3 Scholars who extend to 13 months


As per usual UUSC passport competencies 



  • Regular learning log entries, with a pro-rata number relating to the scholarship area
  • Regular CSRs

Annual Leave

An additional 2 days per additional month of training


Study Leave

An additional 3 days per additional month of training - attendance at the day release course is not required in the extra 13th month of training


Professional Leave

One additional day per additional month of training


Additional guidance for GP ST3 Scholars who extend to 15 months

If you are doing an extra 3 months (Public Health) then the annual/study leave and additional WPBA is increased on a pro-rata basis, however it remains that no additional COTs are needed.

In a 3m extension, 3 CBDs relating to the scholarship work are required - clearly these would be likely to focus on relevant competencies, such as Community Orientation; Ethical approach; Working with colleagues and teams; Fitness to practice; and maybe Admin & IM&T - in addition to relevant learning log entries either under audit/project or academic headings.


ST3 Scholarship Programme Governance


For all doctors on scholarship programmes:

  • At onset of scholarship (within 1 month of starting), DiT writes scholarship learning plan, PDP and agreed aims and objectives of their scholarship time based on the educational options available to them, and agrees to the core expectations of the job description. This is kept on the ePortfolio.
  • There will also be an expectation that naturally occurring evidence about the scholarship activity (e.g. a scholarship course) will be recorded in the ePortfolio and will feed into the final ESR.
  •  Additional CBDs on a topic generated by their scholarship will also be required, as outlined above.
  • At the end of the scholarship, DiT produces a written report of achievements and how they’ve met their scholarship PDP and objectives, which is uploaded to the ePortfolio.
  • DiTs must ensure that they document all activity in a log to demonstrate how they’ve used the additional time. This should also be uploaded to the portfolio and be available for the ES and project supervisor to view.


Scholars on 3-month programmes (public health) will need to provide some additional documentation:

  • Their mentor completes a Clinical Supervisors Report to cover the 3-month attachment. This CSR would need to be done before the trainee's final ESR. This evidence and the trainees report then needs to be assessed by someone familiar with the relevant discipline but not directly involved in the trainee's supervision, as part of the panel process. This assessment can be done virtually (by email). See proforma for this.
  •  The ES uses the CSR in the usual way to compile the ESR prior to ARCP.
